How Ground Source Heat Pumps Work

Ground source heat pumps collect low-grade heat from the ground via a network of pipes (known as a ground loop). The system then compresses that energy to a higher temperature and uses it to provide space heating and hot water.

Because ground temperatures are relatively stable year-round, GSHPs deliver consistent performance through winter and summer.

Ground source heat pumps are designed for long-term efficiency and comfort.

With the right design and insulation, they can reduce your reliance on fossil fuels, lower carbon emissions, and provide dependable heating for decades. GSHPs are also ideal for low-temperature heating systems such as underfloor heating, helping maximise efficiency and comfort across the home.

Is a GSHP Right for My Property?

A GSHP is best suited to properties with sufficient outdoor space for a ground loop, although the exact setup depends on your property.

Your property’s insulation, heating demand and existing heat distribution (radiators or underfloor) also affect suitability and performance. A proper assessment and heat loss calculation ensures the system is sized correctly for reliable results.

Our Ground Source Heat Pump Installation Process

We manage your GSHP project from planning through to commissioning, keeping everything clear and coordinated. This usually includes an initial survey, system design and sizing, installation of the ground loop, heat pump and hot water cylinder (where required), integration with your heating distribution and final testing. We’ll also talk you through how to run the system efficiently so you get the best performance from day one.

Because GSHPs are a whole-home solution, local knowledge matters – from property styles to practical installation access. Renew Energy Solutions installs ground source heat pumps across West Yorkshire including Ilkley, Guiseley, Otley and Harrogate. If you’re planning a heating upgrade, renovation or self-build, we can help you explore whether a ground source heat pump is the right option for your property.
